The key to SEO is knowing the main aim that all search engines share:
“To return the most relevant list of websites for a given search query, with the most relevant pages at the top of the index”
This may seem obvious when you see it written down, but it is so rarely mentioned – even in SEO optimization circles.
This may explain why, despite your site having all the relevant keywords, it still comes out on page 100 of Google. Admittedly, the SEs haven’t yet perfected this practice, but they are doing a pretty good job at it and getting better all the time.
Some people invest most of their SEO efforts chasing the SE algorithms. For example, they may see that sub-domains rank better than directories and so alter their entire site structure to gain a few indexes in the SERP. This is fine – until the algorithms change. And algorithms will always change. But what never changes is the previously mentioned goal that all SEs share: relevance.

I like to say:
“SEO comes last to all other web disciplines, but not least”
The reason I say this is because if you make a site that is usable, easy to navigate and contains information people want to read and find interesting and helpful, most of your SEO work is complete. Relevance!
In a way, SEO is about having a great site. If your site is nothing more that an advertisement for your services, it’s not going to be all that interesting and the SEs will know it!
